Ad Fraud in Mobile: How a Proprietary Exchange Protects Your Budget

Ad Fraud in Mobile: How a Proprietary Exchange Protects Your Budget

$26.8 billion in global media value was lost to programmatic inefficiencies in 2025. That number is easy to read as an abstract industry figure. It is more useful to read it as a budget line, because part of it is almost certainly yours.

The losses are structural, built into the way programmatic supply is assembled. A single mobile impression now travels through five or more hops before it loads. Every hop takes a fee, and every hop creates a blind spot. Bots and bad actors live in those blind spots and exploit them in milliseconds.

The scale of the problem

In Q1 2025, 35% of global mobile-app impressions were sold by unauthorized sellers, and that inventory carried 46% higher invalid traffic rates than authorized supply. More than a third of what is on offer comes from sources the publisher never approved, and it is measurably dirtier than the supply that was.

Why a DSP-side filter is not enough

Most advertisers assume their DSP’s fraud filter has them covered. It does not, at least not completely. By the time your DSP evaluates a bid, the impression has already passed through the resale layers where most fraud is introduced. The filter judges what it can see, and the riskiest part of the journey happened upstream, out of view. Catching fraud after the fact will always be a step behind the people creating it.

How a proprietary exchange changes the equation

Shortening the supply path is the most effective structural defense, and a proprietary exchange is built around exactly that. When you transact through a first-party exchange on owned supply instead of a chain of resellers, three things change:

  1. You get direct access to publishers, with no reseller hops where fraud can be injected.
  2. Traffic is vetted at the source, before it is offered, instead of inspected after the budget is already spent.
  3. You have full visibility into the supply path before you commit a single dollar.

The benefit is not only cleaner inventory. It is budget that reaches real users instead of leaking into the layers of the stack. You cannot filter your way out of a fraud problem you bought into structurally. Owning the path, and verifying every impression at the source, is how you keep your spend working.
