How Real-Time Bidding Works: A Step-by-Step Guide for Performance Teams

How Real-Time Bidding Works: A Step-by-Step Guide for Performance Teams

Every time a mobile app loads an ad, an auction runs, and it finishes before the screen does. Real-time bidding decides which ad you see, what the advertiser pays, and how much of that spend survives the trip. By 2026, programmatic will account for roughly 90% of display ad budgets worldwide, so almost every impression your team buys runs through the process below. Most performance teams operate inside it without ever seeing the mechanism. Here it is.

The auction, in about 100 milliseconds

  1. A user opens an app. An ad slot opens, and the publisher’s SSP packages the opportunity, app, placement, device, geo and audience signals, into a bid request.
  2. The request hits the exchange. The exchange broadcasts it to the connected demand that might want the impression.
  3. Bidders evaluate. Each one scores the impression against its campaigns and returns a price. This is where the intelligence lives.
  4. The auction clears. Most mobile auctions are first-price now, so the winning bid is exactly what gets paid.
  5. The ad is served. The winning creative renders in the app before the content finishes loading.
  6. Attribution closes the loop. If the user converts, an MMP records it, the data that should feed the next bid.

Why the bidder is the part that matters

Steps one, two, five and six are plumbing. Step three, the bid decision, is where campaigns are won or lost, and it is the step most advertisers do not control. Buy through a white-label or black-box DSP and someone else’s algorithm decides what your impression is worth, along with their latency and their fees. Owning the bidder changes that. For example, a proprietary oRTB bidder lets the buyer tune the valuation model directly, react to performance in real time, and remove the hidden hops between request and decision. Fewer hands on the request means less margin lost and a cleaner line from bid to verified outcome.

Real-time bidding is not magic. It is a six-step auction running millions of times a second. Understanding it shows you where your money goes. Owning the bid decision is how you keep more of it working.

Want to own the bid decision instead of renting it? AdSpin runs a proprietary oRTB bidder and exchange built for bid-level transparency and a short, verifiable supply path. See how it works at adspin.io
